Join us to learn about an innovative approach to driving-related offenses that seeks to increase awareness and meaningful accountability amongst dangerous drivers, rather than focusing on punishment, fines or fees. We’ll hear from Amanda Berman, Director of the Red Hook Community Justice Center, who oversees the Center for Court Innovation’s Driver Accountability Program. Started in Brooklyn, the program has expanded to other parts of NYC with the support of their City Council, and in collaboration with groups such as Transportation Alternatives & Families for Safe Streets, who will also share their experiences on this 1-hour webinar. We’ll also hear from NYC Council Member Brad Lander, a longtime champion of the program.
By incorporating elements of restorative justice and focusing on behavior change, the Driver Accountability Program offers a promising and proportionate alternative to traditional justice system responses, while reducing systemic harm and improving road safety for all.
