Prioritizing Meaningful Community Engagement in Vision Zero

April 24, 2024 | 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm | Eastern Time

Just as safe streets are crucial in saving lives, understanding and advancing equity is pivotal in creating safer communities. While the practice of advancing equity looks different across communities, one key pillar of equitable and inclusive Vision Zero planning is meaningful and sustained engagement with the most impacted communities. Data on deaths and serious injuries do provide a helpful framework for understanding where and how the majority of safety risks show up, but they don’t always tell the full story, particularly for communities that have historically been excluded from transportation planning.

Because agencies have varying levels of capacity and access to resources for engagement, robust community engagement will look different across communities. Recognizing this, we’ll be delving deeper into Recommendation 3 of Vision Zero Network’s resource, Prioritizing Health Equity in Vision Zero Planning, on establishing and nurturing relationships with your community in Vision Zero planning. During this webinar, we’ll explore what it looks like to develop a plan for community engagement, how to invest in meaningful engagement both before and after projects, and how to cultivate long-term relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
